Clariddle is a creation I
made for the Kiddle Klub Christmas Swap of 2004. I drew Liz
Williams' name and I was thrilled because I identify with Liz more
than anyone else on in the group because Liz is a lot like me: In
addition to being a doll junkie she's a UNIX geek.
I used an old Windy Fliddle head and rooted it
with blonde saran hair to turn her into Clara of the Nutcracker. The
more I worked on Windy the more I noticed she started to resemble
Cinderiddle and it was then that I realized Mattel had used the same
head mold for the two dolls ( not exactly a huge revelation - I am
sure it was obvious to collectors who had taken the time to think
about, it's just that I had never taken the time to think about it)
Windy's dress was made by Liz's favorite artist DeMarla, who has a
thriving business on eBay. I contacted DeMarla and asked her if she
would accept a commission for a blue nightgown for my project. She
politely explained that she does not accept commissions and I
thanked her for her time. I then purchased a white gown with angel
wings attached and planned to use that, figuring it would work just
fine if I removed the wings. When the white dress arrived DeMarla
had sent a small blue nightgown along with the white dress. The
woman is an angel :-)
Clariddle arrived at Liz's house
in Stafford, Virginia in a toy box filled with books and toys and of
course - a Nutcracker Prince. The books were miniature versions of
books found in my library which I figured might also be found at in
Liz's. Among them: Paris Langford's Kiddle Guide, Cindy Sabulis's
Doll's Guide ( Second Edition), Kernigan and Ritchie's book on the C
Programming Language and a Management book on dealing with people
you can't stand. I made all of those miniature books from books I
have in my own library.
Clariddle is now living with Liz. in
Stafford, Virginia
